In some areas the green season is the best time to visit – for example the deserts in the Central Kalahari Reserve and Nxai Pan in southern Botswana come alive with the rains which in turn attract huge migrations of wildlife into the area. The Green Season months are usually excellent for sightings of wild dogs in the South Luangwa, Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe as packs are much bigger, the puppies are out of their dens but moving slower with more need to rest. Migratory birds are in full breeding song and resplendent in their courting plumage – so this is a superb time to visit for bird enthusiasts. Whilst the grasses can be quite tall and green there is still plenty of wildlife sightings – often close up. With the arrival of the long awaited rains comes a season of intense colours as whole regions spring to life after the hot and dusty dry season.ĭuring the green season the bush is in its fullest burst of growth. Typically the Green Season runs from the middle of November to April in southern Africa and late March to late May in east Africa – although individual lodges and camps do vary considerably. There is less dust in the air and photography is great with the contrast in colours and good light – indeed sunsets can be stunning at this time of the year due to cloud formations and reflections in rivers, lakes and the Okavango Delta. With the rains come the green grasses, lots of baby animals and migrant birds flock into the area around November/December. The rains vary in the timing of their arrival from country to country and also vary from light showers to stunning thunder and lightning storms. A wonderful time to visit Africa – and often the best value with prices falling to around 50% compared to peak season!
